PE and Sports Grant
What is the Sports Funding and how is it used at Trafalgar?
Sports funding was introduced by the Government in September 2013. It was designed to give additional money to support schools in developing Physical Education in Schools and build an ‘Olympic Legacy’. Schools will have to spend the sports funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to choose how they do this. Based on the number across the federation – Infants/KS1 will receive £17,020 and Juniors/KS2 will receive £19,020 which would mean we would receive approximately £36,040 across the Federation for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Primary schools receive additional funding from the government to improve their PE and sports provision. The PE and Sport Premium funding for each school is based on their number of pupils in Years 1 to 6. In most cases, the amount received is determined by the number of eligible pupils at the school based on the January school census. Schools must spend the additional money on improving the quality of their PE provision for the benefit of their pupils.
At Trafalgar Schools' Federation sport and physical education are a priority. We employ a qualified sports coach to work across the school to work with both children and staff as well as a qualified teacher with a PE specialism and with STA qualified swimming instructor. We run many internal sports events and as part of the Richmond Sports Partnership we take part in a local sporting events and competitions. At the end of each year we hold an inclusive Sports Day for all year groups. Swimming is also plays an important part in our physical Education offer. Y2 complete 6 weeks of swimming lessons at Sunbury swimming pool. In KS2 our Y3 and Y4 pupils have 12 weeks of swimming lessons with Y5 and Y6 being able to access the school's swimming club.
We focus on five key priorities for improvement:
- Increasing all staff's confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport
- Increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and sport
- Raising the profile of PE and sport across the school, to support whole school improvement
- Offering a broader and more equal experience of a range of sports and physical activities to all pupils
- Increasing participation in competitive sports
